Sunderland was established in 1879 as a container sports for the local teachers' associations in the district by James Allan. Two years later, the club develop themselves and allowed professional players to join. This policy succeeded in increasing the number of players and improve the financial capability of the club. However, Allan should feel dissatisfied and leave to set up another club, Sunderland Albion, until eventually the club disbanded in 1892.
1890/91 season, Sunderland allowed to appear in the Football League Stoke City after repeated applications are not accepted. Throughout the rest of the 19th century, Sunderland was nicknamed "Team of All Talents" by league founder, William McGregor, thanks to some stunning performances. The result, over the last decade of the 19th century, Sunderland won the league three times. One degree more precisely achieved in the early 20th century, namely the 1901/02 season, thanks to three-point lead over Everton in the final standings.
After three more times to win the league, Sunderland had not yet able to match the greatness of his past. The late 1950s, Sunderland suffers financial scandal since the player to pay salaries above the maximum limit. 1957/58 season, for the first time in 68-year history, Sunderland were relegated from the top division. Sunderland face turned into a club that often inhabit the lower divisions of English football competition. Black Cats even have to stick in the third division after relegation season 1986/87. Sunderland are still up and down appearance, though it was returned status as a top tier participant during the past decade.
